Pergola DOC: Wine from the Heart of Marche

What is Pergola DOC?

Pergola DOC is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata wine appellation in the Marche region of central-eastern Italy. Established in 2005, it focuses on red, rosato (rosé), spumante (sparkling), and dessert-style wines primarily based on the perfumed Aleatico grape and its local clone known as Vernaccia Rossa di Pergola. Pergola wines range from approachable everyday sips to more refined riserva and passito styles. Vinerra+3Italian Wine Central+3Wine-Searcher+3

History and Origins

  • Although Pergola DOC is relatively young (2005), viticulture in the Pergola area has much older roots. The Aleatico clone used here—sometimes called Vernaccia Rossa di Pergola—is believed to have been in the territory since 1234 when Gubbio founded the city of Pergola. • Before DOC status, local winemaking traditions included rosso, rosato, and sweet/dessert wines, including passito and novello styles. The establishment of the DOC gave formal recognition and regulation to local practices. Wine-Searcher+1

Where It’s Made: Geography & Terroir

  • Region & Communes: Pergola DOC sits within the province of Pesaro in Marche. Key communes include Pergola, Fratterosa, Frontone, Serra San Abbondio, and San Lorenzo in Campo. Wine-Searcher+2Wineguide+2
  • Landscape & Soil: The vineyards are on gently rolling hills, with soil types that include clay, limestone, and in some parts sandy-loamy mixes. These contribute to both water retention and good drainage, supporting Aleatico’s aromatic potential. Vinerra+2Wineguide+2
  • Altitude & Climate: Vineyards are planted between about 150 m and 600 m above sea level. The climate is Mediterranean: warm, dry summers with Adriatic breezes, mild winters, and enough rainfall to supply the vines without overly high humidity. Nighttime cooling helps preserve acidity. The Grape (or Blend)

  • Aleatico / Vernaccia Rossa di Pergola: This is the star grape. In many styles (especially varietal Pergola Aleatico, passito, superiore, riserva) it must be at least 85%. In more blended styles (rosso, rosato, spumante with less strict style) the Aleatico share can be as low as 60% combined with other red grapes permitted (OARG – “other authorized red grapes”). • Styles include:
    • Rosato / Rosè (still and possibly frizzante/spumante)
    • Rosso (red)
    • Novello (early release red)
    • Superiore / Riserva (where higher alcohol, more aging required)
    • Spumante Rosato / Spumante Rosso
    • Passito (dessert-style with dried grapes) Italian Wine Central+1

Winemaking & DOC Regulations

  • Vineyard elevation, permitted grape percentages (Aleatico vs others), style definitions (superiore, riserva, spumante, passito) are all codified in the disciplinare. Italian Wine Central+1

Tasting Notes

  • Rosso / Aleatico non-sweet styles: Rich ruby color with purple hues; intense aromatics—cherry, pomegranate, wild berry, sometimes with hints of underbrush. Fruity yet balanced, with fresh acidity, moderate tannins, usually dry in the modern/drink-young styles. Wine-Searcher+1
  • Rosato / Rosè / Spumante Rosato: Light red berry aromas (raspberry, strawberry), floral notes, crisp, refreshing finish. Some versions may show more complexity if aged or oak-influenced. Italian Wine Central+2Wineguide+2
  • Superiore / Riserva: Deeper color, more structured; potential for secondary aromas (spice, leather, subtle oak) with longer aging; more pronounced tannins and presence. Wine-Searcher+1

Where to Buy & Pricing

  • Wine shops specializing in Marche or Italian wines are your best bet in Italy; outside Italy, boutique wine retailers or online shops may carry Pergola DOC, though availability is limited.
  • Example wine: Villa Ligi Pergola Aleatico Vernaculum—a varietal/per producer example that gives a sense of style, aroma, and pairing. Marc De Grazia Selections
  • Pricing tends to be modest to mid-range, particularly for non-Superiore styles. Riserva, varietal Aleatico, or Passito will be more expensive.

FAQ on Pergola DOC

  • Q: What makes Pergola DOC unique vs other Marche wines?
A: Its focus on Aleatico (especially the local clone Vernaccia Rossa di Pergola), its variety of styles (from rosato to passito), sweet/dessert wines, and its small production scale make it distinctive. Also, the historical roots (the 1234 clone origin) give it cultural depth.
  • Q: Is Pergola DOC good for wine beginners?
A: Yes—especially the lighter Rosato, Spumante Rosato, and young Rosso versions offer fragrant, approachable wines. The sweeter styles can help ease into more robust reds.
  • Q: How long can Pergola Riserva or Passito age?
A: With good vintage and producer, the Riserva versions will evolve through secondary aromas over several years. Passito styles often benefit from bottle aging too, preserving sweetness while deepening flavor profiles.
  • Q: What does Aleatico grape taste like?
A: Aleatico brings strong aromatic qualities: red fruit (cherry, raspberry), floral notes (rose, violets), sometimes with honey or dried fruit in sweeter/dessert or passito styles. It also has good acidity when well grown.

Fun Facts & Cultural Notes

  • The name of the town Pergola is linked linguistically to pergula, and the wine here is tied to one of the oldest recorded clones of Aleatico/Vernaccia. Wineguide+1
