What is Moscadello di Montalcino DOC?
Moscadello di Montalcino DOC wine is one of Tuscany’s most historic sweet wines, crafted primarily from Moscato Bianco grapes in the medieval hilltop town of Montalcino. Recognized as a DOC in 1984, it comes in three styles — Tranquillo (still), Frizzante (lightly sparkling), and Vendemmia Tardiva (late harvest). Each offers fragrant aromatics, delicate sweetness, and a taste of Renaissance wine culture.
History & Origins
- Celebrated since the Renaissance, Moscadello was praised in 1540 by Pietro Aretino, while Pope Urban VIII made it a court favorite.
- In 1685, poet Francesco Redi immortalized it in Bacco in Toscana, calling Moscadello “divine.”
- Its vineyards nearly disappeared after phylloxera in the late 19th century, but it was revived in the 20th century and awarded DOC status in 1984.
“Moscadello is Montalcino’s forgotten jewel, once cherished by popes and poets.”
